Lessons from Mr Rogers

As a child, Mr. Rogers was an important part of my life.  It's hard to explain to British people who didn't grow up with the show why Mr. Rogers had such an impact on me and the lives of other children.  I remember feeling that he was speaking directly to me.  I read about the experiences of others and that is a common remembrance, that Mr Rogers was speaking directly to us.

That's how he saw it.  Mr Rogers often spoke about how he approached his television show as if he was speaking to one particular child. One of his main messages that he repeated again and again was:

“There is only one person in the whole world like you, and people can like you just because you’re you.”

Mr Rogers really SAW us, the viewers.  He saw children.  And we felt it. It's been powerful to realise that, through the television screen, one man had such an impact on so many.

I believe that we can all have this impact.  I feel passionate that we can all bring the key principles that Mr Rogers lived every day into our interactions with everyone.

1. Acknowledge  that we are unique and that we can be liked just who we are.  We need to do this for ourselves first and then we can do it for others.

2. Talk about hard subjects honestly.  Talking about death, racism and war was all part of Mr. Rogers programme. We can't run away and hide and we aren't protecting our children or ourselves by not talking about it.

3. Being curious and engendering curiousity in ourselves and others

4. Talking about feelings and our emotions.   Feelings are a large part of who we are.

What if we all could do this just alittle bit more? What if we all were able to bring this into our interactions and follow the Mr Rogers principles in our own lives?  Try doing some of the above principles just ALITTLE bit more - like 10% more, could make a real difference.

We can be that person, whether it's that one person for someone else or perhaps it's being one of many people who can be the person that invests in others, that shows them they they are liked, JUST WHO THEY ARE.

"Anyone who has ever been able to sustain good work has had at least one person – and often many – who have believed in him or her. We just don’t get to be competent human beings without a lot of different investments from others… From the time you were very little, you’ve had people who have smiled you into smiling, people who have talked you into talking, sung you into singing, loved you into loving.”
